A Step-by-Step Guide to Reinforcing Moulds with Jute Scrims

Updated: Oct 16

"Jute scrims are an excellent way to strengthen your moulds, ensuring they last throughout the casting process. Follow our step-by-step guide to learn how to properly apply jute scrims for maximum support."

If you’re looking to reinforce your moulds and increase their longevity, using jute scrims is a simple yet highly effective solution. Jute scrims are lightweight, woven fabrics made from natural fibres, perfect for adding strength to your moulds. This guide will take you through the step-by-step process of applying jute scrims to your moulds for maximum reinforcement.

1. Gather Your Materials

Before you begin, make sure you have the following materials:

  • Jute scrims (cut to size for your mould)

  • Casting plaster or other moulding material

  • Mixing container and tools

  • Brush or spatula for applying layers

2. Prepare the Mould

Start by ensuring that your mould is clean and free of any debris. For more complex moulds, apply a thin layer of mould release agent to ensure that the final cast comes out smoothly.

3. Apply the First Layer of Plaster

Mix your plaster according to the manufacturer’s instructions and apply a thin, even layer inside the mould. This initial layer will act as a base for the jute scrim to adhere to. Be sure to smooth out any bubbles or imperfections using a brush or spatula.

4. Place the Jute Scrim

Once the first layer of plaster is applied and is still wet, carefully place the jute scrim onto the surface. Gently press it into the plaster, ensuring that it fully adheres to the mould without any air pockets or wrinkles.

5. Apply Additional Layers of Plaster

After the jute scrim is in place, apply another layer of plaster over it to fully encapsulate the scrim. This creates a "sandwich" effect, with the scrim acting as the middle reinforcing layer. Make sure the plaster fully covers the jute scrim to avoid any weak spots in the mold.

6. Repeat for Larger Molds

For particularly large or complex moulds, you may need to apply multiple layers of jute scrim. Repeat the process of applying a plaster layer, placing the scrim, and covering it with another layer of plaster until you reach the desired strength.

7. Allow the Mould to Cure

Once all layers are applied, allow the mould to fully dry and cure. This process can take 24 hours or more, depending on the size of the mould and the type of plaster used.

Jute scrims offer an easy and effective way to reinforce your moulds, making them stronger and more durable. By following these steps, you’ll be able to create a robust mould that can handle the demands of casting without risk of cracking or breaking. With a little patience and attention to detail, your moulds will be reinforced and ready for use in no time.
